A new generation of transmissions completes a new generation of Camaro. For the
first time, a six-speed manual will be available with a six-cylinder engine. The
transmission chosen is an Aisin-Warner and features a low first gear ratio for
competent take-offs, and for increased economy and less engine wear, a direct fifth
and overdrive sixth gears. The Tremec TR6060 is the manual transmission that will
back the 6.2L V8 on SS models. Like the T6 from the 2002 Z28, this transmission
will have overdrive in both fifth and sixth gears.
For those that want and automatic, GM's Hydra-Matic division will supply
six-speed units for use behind either engine. A model 6L50 will come behind V6
cars and a stronger 6L80 unit will back up V8's. Both will have a slightly
different ratio spread with the same sixth gear overdrive of .67 to one. The
transmission will have a driver selectible "TAPshift" which allows the driver
to control the transmission shift points. The powertrain control module will
prevent the driver from selecting a gear that is not within the operating
capabilities of the engine, yet at the same time will hold the engine at or
near the redline should the driver choose.
